How to set up the tap to pay on Google Pay and Paytm

Over the past few years, India has seen an explosion in digital payments, largely thanks to UPI. With the help of UPI, you can make quick purchases by simply scanning a QR Code and entering your PIN effortlessly. Tap-to-pay is one of the most widely used payment methods outside of India, but it’s not the fastest. Some Key Points-

NFC stands for Near Field Communication, which is a wireless communication technology used to transfer data between two devices within close proximity. How do you add a credit card to Google Pay and start making tap-to-pay payments? Don’t worry; we will explain them in more detail below!

How Does Tap to Pay Work?

Let us first understand how this mobile payment system works before we look at how to integrate it into your app. Most modern smartphones include Near Field Communication (NFC) support, which enables the contactless payment system known as “tap-and-go”.

The NFC chip in mobile devices works similarly to the chips on many contactless payment cards that support contactless payments. You need to press the back of your cell phone to the PoS device and payment terminal, and the transaction should be completed.

  1. How to Add a Card to Paytm
  • Update your Paytm mobile application to the latest version from Google Play.
  • Next, open the application and click on the search icon in the upper right corner.
  • Tap to pay. You can also navigate to the All Services section and select the Tap To Pay option from the left panel.
  • Click the Add a Card option and enter your Visa/ Mastercard details.

How to set the default payment method for NFC payments on an Android device

  • Open the Settings app on your smartphone.
  • Go to the NFC tab under “Connection Preferences.”
  • Here, select the contactless payment option and click on the default payment mode option.
  • After doing so, choose your preferred NFC payment app like Google Pay or Paytm.

  • Turn on NFC on your phone.
  • Now, tap the contactless logo near the PoS machine with the contactless reader on your smartphone. Wait for a few seconds.
  • The transaction will be completed automatically if the amount is below Rs. 5,000. However, if the price is more than 5000 rupee, you need to enter your address PIN on your smartphone
  • If the transaction doesn’t happen after tapping your phone on the POS, just move your phone a little over the contactless logo on the POS until it recognizes the NFC chip.

  1. What if I want to pay for something using Tap to Pay on an Apple iPhone in India?

Unfortunately, you cannot use your iPhone to pay for things in India because Apple Pay isn’t available there yet. Apps like Google Pay and Paytm haven’t yet been updated with the tap-to-pay functionality. However, this may change in the future, so we will update the article when necessary.

  1. My smartwatch supports Near Field Communication (NFC) Can I use Google Pay on it and make contactless payments?

If you live outside of India, you can easily use your smartwatch for contactless tap-and-go transactions. Currently, you cannot install Google Pay on your watch and make NFC payments natively. But there is a loophole through which you can use your smartwatch to make tap-to-pay payments, and we’re already working on a detailed tutorial.

  1. Does PhonePe support Tap to Pay?

As of now, only Google Pay and PayPal support tap-to-purchase in India. Moreover, PhonePe has not yet announced any plans to add this feature in the near term, so we cannot speculate on when it will be available.
